Dear Homeowner,
Who you select to work in and around your home is a very big decision, even though you might not think it is.
The contractor you select for this project will be in and around your home, for days and maybe weeks. They may have access to the interior of your home and as a result access to your personal belongings.
Most important of all, they will be in dose contact with you your family, friends, and neighbors. For all of these reasons, it makes sense to gather as much information as possible about any potential contractor you will use.

Many homeowners are far too trusting in who they select for a contractor and set themselves up for disappointment or worse because they do not thoroughly research contractors.
It is not enough to simply cake a contractor’s word that they will do a good job. I would like to encourage you to get proof that backs up their qualifications for working on your project – this is time well spent.
While no process is perfect, and contractors can “fudge” on their qualifications, some process for selecting a contractor is better than no process at all.
Below you will find a checklist of all of the documents you should ask to see before you accept a proposal from any contractor, even those recommended by a friend or family member.

While every piece of proof is not necessary for every project, many are.
If a contractor is unwilling or unable to furnish this documentation to you in advance of signing a contract, that should be a warning sign.
I know from experience that it is a lot easier to gather together a few pieces of paper than it is to complete a painting project to the satisfaction of a customer. If getting this information to you is a challenge for a contractor, imagine how he’ll struggle with your project once the “real work” actually begins!
